our new pets and some weekend pics

There is never a dull moment with my husband. Like the time I came home to find him roasting mini-marshmallows on our kitchen table over a campfire made of toothpicks. Or the time... or that other time.... you get the point. So when I was visiting home and he called to say he had "caught some pets" for Porter I could only imagine what they were. While driving home one night apparently there were frogs hopping along the road so of course he stopped to catch some, and by some I mean 12. He put them in his oversized water bottle and took them home.

This is the photo he texted me to inform me of his shenanigans.

They spent the first couple days living in our bathroom garbage with some saran wrap over the top. I told him it was cruel and that they couldn't live like that and he said not to worry he had been feeding them the lasagna I had left for him and he was sure if they got hungry enough they would start eating it. NEIL! He decided to start catching bugs for them and went outside to pick up rocks and collect the crawly things he found underneath. I was sure that I would have to come home and put the kibosh on this business but I got home to see he was really caring for these little critters (and thankfully had narrowed the collection down to 4) and had made them a comfortable home.

He'd also been to a pet store to buy crickets to feed them. All it took was one meal time where we all sat and watched them hunt and eat the bugs and I decided they could stay. So fun!

Porter is thrilled with them and stands and "ribbits" at them. We have yet to come up with some fun names though - so far we've got Frog-Frog and Frog On The Frog. Hmmm. Neil is reading up about how to winterize them and is sure we can get them to hibernate for a few months. Heaven help me.

**********

Completely unrelated (and cause my mom cares more about my kids than my frogs), I wanted to share a couple photos from our trip home. One of the best parts of being home is playing so much with our neighbors and cousins. Porter couldn't wait to get home to "his kids." These yahoos are too cute and have a lot of fun together.

And I just had to crop out this picture of my Rigby. I can't believe how big he is getting. His fat little face, super blonde hair and little bum chin is just almost too much to handle! Cute, cute, cute.

Feeding frogs and kissing fat cheeks! Enjoy your weekend. :)

it's been 10 years

I've mentioned before that I'm a huge fan of 30 Rock. As I was driving home last week so I could attend my *cough, cough* 10 year high school reunion, I couldn't help but think of the episode where Liz Lemon attends her high school reunion and finds out that while she remembers being a nerd and the one to be picked on in high school everyone else remembers her as the bully and the one to do all the picking on! I have very fond memories of high school and would like to think I, and those involved, left it mostly unscathed which is why I was sure I was going to have a similar experience as Liz, where I show up anxious to see old friends only to realize everyone's disdain for me. Well... that didn't happen! Or at least not that was verbalized. So, 'twas a great 10 year reunion all around! Not only was I not singled out as a crazy bitz, I was voted as the one who "kept their good looks." So, thanks! I'll take that. (But.... wanna see my stretch marks? I totally fooled you.)

And on a related side note, I received a welcome reassurance this weekend as well. Nothing major, just an appreciation of my youth. I can say things like "my youth" now: I've been to a 10 year reunion. I grew up in a town of 1700 people and although it's developing it will always be a small prairie town. I absolutely loved growing up there and have treasured being a Magrath girl. Since my parents moved away 9 years ago I have unfortunately felt a disconnect from my hometown. Despite living there from 6 months old through 19 years old I have let myself feel like I don't belong there anymore. This weekend was so good in helping me realize that I am a Magrath girl, that I still belong there and that people there do love me. I'm sure this sounds trivial but I appreciated realizing that despite being gone for so long somewhere I love still loves me back.

Great weekend.

housewife fail

So, I tried to be really helpful and "iron" Neil's shirt with a hairdryer (I've used this method many times to get slight wrinkles out of skirts and light shirts, it works!) BUT instead I melted a perfect hairdryer-nozzle-circle into the front of his shirt. Yep. Wish I was doing your laundry?
Woops!

He said he's still going to keep me though. :)

things I've been loving lately

Because it's been a while since I posted last I kinda feel the need to do an update or explain my absence or something. I think it speaks for itself when I just say we've been enjoying the amazing summer weather and have been outdoors as much as possible! Instead of an update I'm just going to write a little list of things I've been loving lately and hopefully that will give you an insight as to what I've been up to

  • The weather! This has honestly been one of the most beautiful summers I've had in a long time. The weather has been amazing and I can't get over how many parks, spray parks, pools and places to be outside there are in Saskatoon! We go out almost every afternoon to spend time in the sun. My boys are loving it and so am I.
  • Lipliner. I've never really been into it and actually tend to shy away from the "done" look it gives but after watching Kandee use it so much, and look so darn cute doing it, I've been trying it more and am actually enjoying it. I've only got 2 lipliners - both from inexpensive drugstore brand Annabelle: a pinkish one - Demure, and a nude/brown one - Havane. I am impressed with the quality and I feel that for now they are meeting my lip-lining needs.

  • MAC Cream Colour Base in Hush. I am in LOVE with this product. It creates the absolute most beautiful dewy glow. I use it on the top of my cheekbones and down the bridge of my nose as a highlight and I love the way it looks. It is so easy to use and lasts all day. Some days I use a little more and apply my blush right over the top. It makes the blush more dewy and last longer. It's just a great product and for now my other highlighters are going completely unloved.

  • Del Monte Fruit Twist fruit snacks. My boys have been loving these this summer. They are made from 100% fruit but Porter thinks he's eating a licorice. There's only 2 in each little pouch but that's one for each of my boys! They are super easy to throw in my bag and for a box of 6 pouches the price tag of under $1.50 is completely reasonable.
    • Rotisserie Chicken. I am loving those things this summer! The first day we just eat the meat with some vegetables and a salad, the next day I make sandwiches (or this week I made a chicken salad and put it on croissants!) and the third day I pick the bones clean and make chicken and Stove Top casserole. That's a lot of meals from a $7 chicken!
What have been some of your summer favorites?
